Lasting winter beauty

The gift that keeps giving - how to enjoy your poinsettia for a long time

With the onset of winter you might yearn for a bit of colour around the house: poinsettias in bright reds, luminous whites, elegant creamy shades or joyful colour mixes will chase away the gloomy greys of winter – and, moreover, what most people don’t know: poinsettias will delight you even long after the festive season. With a few simple care tips you can nurture and enjoy them well into the New Year.

Important: No wet feet!
Your poinsettia does not appreciate too much of a good thing. Dripping moisture around the roots or stagnant water at the bottom of the pot will have serious consequences. Too much water, and the poinsettia leaves will turn yellow and finally shed altogether. Just wait with watering it until your plant clearly looks thirsty. Dehydrated hanging leaves will quickly recover after being refreshed with the sufficient amount of moisture. Should the leaves show pale spots or turn brown around the edges, you should add a liquid nutrient to the water once a month.

The star-treatment for your poinsettia
Poinsettias are no divas, but very sensitive to climate: They will not appreciate the cold or draughts – temperatures below 15 degrees Centigrade are certainly not good for them. Be careful when you buy them! Wrap the plant well after purchase and bring them to your warm home as soon as possible. The best climate for your poinsettia is a room temperature between 15 and 22 degrees Centigrade. A bright location and it will thrive the most; however, if placed too close to dry or warm air from your radiator or exposed to direct winter sun, its colourful foliage will suffer.

The right choice
The tip is: Watch out when buying your poinsettia! Be careful to choose a quality poinsettia. Your best care and nurturing is in vain if the poinsettia was already damaged before purchase. Check for strong thick foliage and budded flowers without any visible sign of damage while picking your plant. Avoid buying poinsettias on display in draughty locations, such as the shop entrance or exit area. Make sure that the plant for sale is not too wet or dry by carefully feeling the soil with your finger. If you follow our advice, you can be sure your poinsettia will reward you with a long life in return.
